Summary[]

Cedric of Chessington resumes his tale of the brave Sir Gavinaugh...

Gavinaugh of Arrethtrae, formerly Gavin of Chessington, parts from the Prince after many days spent under His tutelage to begin his mission of taking word of the Prince to the entire kingdom. As the Prince departs with a force of Silent Warriors, Gavinaugh is unexpectedly reunited with Triumph, the horse he had last seen dying from a poisoned wound. The two make their way to Chessington, where Gavin makes contact with the Knights of the Prince. Though initially dubious of his apparent conversion, they are persuaded after Weston arrives to vouch for his friend and they hear the full story of Gavinaugh's encounters with the Prince.

After a brief dispute concerning the carrying of the Prince's message to the Outdwellers of the kingdom, Gavinaugh and Weston make their way to the city of Kumbria. They soon discover that some of the citizens live in fear of one of the Shadow Warriors but slay the villain and open the way for a great many of the citizens to become Knights of the Prince. Gavinaugh and Weston subsequently travel to Santiok, center of a vile slave trade. While there, they meet an enslaved young woman named Keanna who, after being released for her troublesome behavior, attaches herself to the pair of them as an unlikely traveling companion.

When the group moves on after establishing a haven at Santiok, Keanna attempts to kill Gavinaugh during the night but is unable to bring herself to do so. Gavinaugh then learns that she is the Outdweller girl he left to the mercy of a pair of Shadow Warriors during his time as one of the Noble Knights. The trio make their way to Weston's home, Cresthaven, where Keanna benefits greatly from the company of Weston's family. Gavinaugh, though finding himself growing fond of Keanna, agrees that she should remain with Weston and his family while he continues his journey.

In Penwell, Gavinaugh's efforts draw the ire of Governor Thurman, who has him beaten and left for dead outside the city. However, following a miraculous interview with the Prince, Gavinaugh returns to life and is cared for by several of the knights he has recruited in the region. He eventually ends up in prison and is joined by Weston, who came to help Gavinaugh with Keanna in tow after hearing of his difficulties. Thurman comes to make a deal with Gavinaugh to leave Penwell, but is persuaded to release him, Weston, and Sandon after a pair of Silent Warriors appear without warning in the dark prison.

Gavinaugh, Keanna, Sandon, and Weston make their way to Thecia, a region known for its grand but brutal tournaments between members of the nobility. Inspired by an account of an Unknown Lord among those whom the competing knights fight for, Gavinaugh decides to fight in the tournament on this lord's behalf as a means of reaching many of the people in one attempt. With Keanna acting as his squire on her own insistence, Gavinaugh takes part and makes his way to the final round despite his refusal to kill or disable his opponents upon defeating them. After defeating tournament favorite Sir Bavol to become champion, Gavinaugh proclaims the Prince to the people of Thecia and equates Him with the Unknown Lord.

In a further departure from the traditions of Thecia, Gavinaugh chooses Keanna-struggling between her desire for vengeance and her own growing affection towards Gavinaugh-as his Lady of the Tournament. With a haven of the Knights of the Prince now established in Thecia, Gavinaugh resolves to return to Chessington. After a time of fellowship with the Knights of the Prince there, he learns that the Noble Knights have captured Weston's family with the intent of putting them all to death. Rushing to the city square, Gavinaugh defeats Kifus and forces him to release his captives before surrendering himself to the custody of the Noble Knights.

While a prisoner in Chessington, Gavinaugh speaks with both Kifus and Leisel, whom Gavinaugh briefly courted, shaking the former and disgusting the latter with his commitment to the Prince. The Noble Knights resolve in council to send Gavinaugh to Namor, and Leisel then brings Keanna to visit Gavinaugh out of regard for their former affection. Keanna reveals that the Noble Knights have unwittingly enabled Gavinaugh's next mission from the Prince: to bear testimony to Vespas, Duke of Namor. She also delivers a mysterious flask for Gavinaugh to drink from provided by a Silent Warrior to give Gavinaugh protection on the journey.

Gavinaugh is delivered into the custody of Dante, captain of the Namoran ship Raven, who is quickly convinced that Gavinaugh is not the dangerous criminal Kifus made him out to be. Gavinaugh also earns the esteem of the rest of the ship's crew by aiding them in battle with the Tempests, fierce seagoing barbarians that force the ship to take refuge in the "haunted" Isles of Melogne. There, Gavinaugh astounds the native Melitans by defeating both one of the monstrous Strangling Trees and the Shadow Warrior Malthus. He is quick to turn their adoration to the Prince, before continuing his journey to Namor aboard the Raven.

In Namor, Gavinaugh testifies before the Duke and his council and is given freedom to do virtually anything but return to Chessington. He soon establishes a haven in Namor, and is joined by Keanna, Sandon, and Weston. During a journey through the Black Woods with his friends, Gavinaugh confesses his long-growing feelings to Keanna. Though Keanna returns his affections, she struggles with accepting the Prince due to the suffering she and her family endured.

As Keanna is pondering the matter, she is seized by Gavinaugh's old foe Devinoux and his fellow Shadow Warriors. Gavinaugh, joined by Sandon and Weston, fight and pursue the villains, and are joined by Porunth and a force of Silent Warriors. Gavinaugh is forced to go on alone to Devinoux's stronghold, where he faces a monstrous dragon known as the Tarmuwth in addition to Devinoux himself. Keanna, who is found by the Prince in her despair, is able to help Gavinaugh slay both warrior and dragon. However, Gavinaugh is badly wounded in the battle, and only saved from being poisoned by another Shadow Warrior due to Keanna's experience in judging the character of her former slave masters.

With Gavinaugh's wounds in danger of proving fatal, Porunth takes him away to carry him across the Great Sea. However, Gavinaugh recovers enough to insist upon staying in Arrethtrae with Keanna, and Porunth reluctantly reunites him with his friends. Cedric, in his epilogue to the tale, notes that Gavinaugh and Keanna eventually married and continued to serve the Prince as his knights. Eventually, however, Gavinaugh's wounds overcame him, and he was taken across the sea, leaving his story yet unfinished.
